Sotomomayor and the "Wise Latina"

I'll talk more about this later, but I don't find her words offensive and definitely not racist at all. But more on that later.

The Republican Party Can't Quit Racism After the 2008 election, it was clear that the Republican Party could not survive as an all-white male party. The country's non-white population has simply increased too much for the GOP to not attract a sizeable share of minorities' votes and survive. Times have changed. Had last fall's election been decided with 1980's racial electorate composition, John McCain and (gasp!) Sarah Palin would be in charge. Instead, Senator McCain is still Senator McCain. The Republican Party made terrific gains during the Nixon and Reagan years through the use of the Southern Strategy. The Party appealed to whites, especially southerners, who concluded that national policy had catered to black folks for far too long. That strategy, however, is not efficacious in national elections any longer. The Party bigwigs understand the pressing need to attract votes from minority communities. Justice Brandeis and Legacy When I'm not writing my book, I read as much legal scholarship as possible, particularly race & the law work. I decided to check out Christopher A. Bracey and read his article entitled Louis Brandeis and the Race Question (cite: 52 Ala. L. Rev. 860). His basic thesis, as I see it, is that Brandeis is heralded as "The People's Lawyer" because he fit the image of the lawyer who protected the little guy from corporations and powerful interests generally. Yet, Justice Brandeis who served on the Supreme Court from 1916-1939, and was an attorney before then, never protected the group of people who most were subordinated, blacks. This, however, does not alter his reputation. While on the Court, Brandeis voted with the majority on every race case the Court decided.
